Mykonos is a great first island to start to the island hop through the Greek islands! In Mykonos, you have the freedom to party it up or relax and get adjusted to the time change (if you’re coming from the USA). We chose the relaxing option as you will see below.

How to get there
Mykonos is accessible by ferry or by plane. I would recommend the plane option which only takes about 30 minutes of air time vs a 2 hour 35 minute minimum ferry ride. Aegean Airlines offered an quick flight for a similar price to the ferry.
While you will likely be able to catch a cab at the airport, I would highly recommend arranging a airport pickup ahead of time. Check with your hotel ahead of your trip as they may even provide a complimentary transfer. Our hotel offered this option and we were able to walk right out the airport terminal and directly into the awaiting car that our hotel had sent for us.
Where to stay
After a quick car ride, we were checking into the Mykonos Ammos Hotel. This 5-star beachfront luxury boutique hotel is one of Hyatt’s Small Luxury Hotel properties. While we travel with a combination of points and cash, we utilized this Hyatt SLH hotel and booked with points. We booked a basic room and upon check-in the front desk staff upgraded us to a beachfront suite. This room came with a large beachfront patio and beach seating on Ornos Beach.
This hotel gave off incredible Greek island vibes with its white facilities, beachfront loungers, and flowering bougainvilleas throughout.
We stayed two nights in Mykonos at this hotel. The first night we were jet lagged and a bit exhausted from our Acropolis adventure in Athens in the morning so we spent some time exploring the hotel. The beachfront rooms on property are incredible and the restaurant on site had a great dinner selection to choose from.
Little Venice
Mykonos is exactly what you imagined in a Greek island. We coordinated with our hotel’s car service to drop us off near the windmills in Little Venice to explore. Obviously, the first think on the list to see was the iconic windmills. The windmills are no longer in use but they will still be a sight to see. Fun fact: Mykonos is nicknamed “the island of the winds”. It truly lives up to that reputation. It was extremely windy (especially on the hill with the windmills)!
After you see the windmills, walk down the hill and you will be face to face with the famous Little Venice area of Mykonos. We explored the narrow walkways for hours and got lost in the white washed stone streets. There are a ton of fun shops to stop in and we made sure to find some great linen shirts (because they are required to fit in in Greece). These streets are beautiful and there is nothing quite like them; however, I could definitely understand why people would not find them enjoyable during busy season. They are quite narrow and crowds would make it uncomfortable to navigate. For reasons like this and the popularity of Mykonos, I would highly recommend visiting the island during shoulder season.
Eat and drink
If you need a drink break while exploring the area, make sure you visit Negrita (which is a hit on instagram). We were able to score a seat right on the water and absolutely loved the place. The views, vibes, and drinks at this bar could have kept us entertained the entire day.
Looking for the best view, we chose to eat dinner at nice nice n easy. This restaurant sits at the bottom of the windmill hill on the water. Restaurant staff sat us at the best seat of the house (in my opinion). While sipping wine, my husband and I split a very large gyro entrée while watching a picture perfect sunset over Little Venice.
What to pack
When it comes to packing, I would say to pack the usual for a beach / warm weather vacation.
- Something nicer for dinner: flowy dresses and skirts for the ladies / linen button ups for the guys
- Swimsuits and cover ups
- Comfortable but stylish (of course) shoes for all of the walking you will do
- Jean jacket or other light jacket option (if you are traveling in shoulder season, it can get cool in the evening)

Final Thought on Mykonos
We got exactly what we needed out of the island. Now, we definitely got scolded for not “partying it up” til 5am like many visitors. But that’s just not our style. But, if partying is your vibe, this is the island for it. Make sure you do some research ahead of time for some clubs you would like to visit.
